Mr. Paul maintains a longstanding commitment to health issues that have roots in a diagnosis of kidney disease in the 1980s. He ultimately received a pair of kidney transplants, first from his brother and subsequently from a friend and colleague, and he established an annual Kidney Walk for the National Kidney Foundation in 2002. This well-attended event attracts 900 walkers and has raised nearly a million dollars toward research, education, and treatment. He has additionally served on the board of the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area.
